is to tie governor mitt romney -- sorry, tie governor romney to the ryan budget. and as one top democrat put it to me, the idea is to make the case that romney/ryan in electing that ticket means americans would be electing the intellectual leader of the house republicans, as one person put it, that paul ryan is the intellectual leader of the house republicans and he should not be able tonight to duck from any specifics. so, again, we will hear that word, specifics. and look for the vice president to try to get paul ryan to talk about budget details in this debate tonight, wolf. >> jessica, has the vice president done his tour of the actual debate hall yet? >> reporter: he has. he did that tour a little earlier today before 2:00 p.m. he sat in the chair. he looked at the monitor where you get your time cues. and i'm told all that went smoothly. he also before he boarded the plane today leaving from delaware he talked to reporters and he was asked what is his strategy. take a listen to what he said. >> i'm looking forward to it. nice of you guys to be here. are you on the plane with us? all ri
this man, mitt romney, the next president of the united states. >> tonight, joe biden and paul ryan in their only vice presidential face off. >> we are going to give you a clear choice. >> he has a fundamentally different view. >> the vice president setting his sights on the romney ryan economic plan. >> we've seen this movie before. it ended in a catastrophe. >> the the congressman taking aim at the obama-biden white house record. >> you can turn on the tv and you can look at how the obama foreign policy is blowing up in our faces. >> the candidates know the debate stakes are higher after ryan's boss scored and biden's boss stumbled. now, c nnn's coverage. >> we will take responsibility and own up and get things dope. >> america's coming back! we're not going back! we're going forward! >> the nation is watching. voters want answers and america's future is up for debate. >>> this is danville, kentucky. the sight of tonight's debate. joe biden and paul ryan is getting ready for their only chance to compete face to face on the issues. we want to welcome our viewers in the united state
. but this one could be different. there is pressure on both men, congressman ryan to keep mitt romney's momentum going, and vice president biden to stop that momentum. the moderator tonight is martha raddatz, and for this debate the candidates will be seated at the table. >> good evening, and welcome to the first and only vice presidential debate of 2012s sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. i'm martha raddatz of abc news, and i am honored to moderate this debate between two moan who have dedicated much of their lives to public service. tonight's debate is divided between domestic and foreign policy issues. and i'm going to move back and forth between foreign and domestic since that is what a vice president or president would have to do. we will have nine different segments. at the beginning of each segment, i will ask both candidates a question, and they will each have two minutes to answer. then i will encourage a discussion between the candidates with follow-up questions. by coin toss, it has been determined that vice president biden will be first to answer the opening questio
of what you see in the polls. this momentum that's very much on the side of mitt romney. and paul ryan. so it is very much up to vice president biden to take a shot here and try to stop some of that momentum because if you see a win by paul ryan, it's covered as a one-two punch. the momentum will continue. we know talking to some of the vice president's aides that he's going to come out swinging. this's the expectation, to be on offense. we've been told he's eager, feeling good and trying to draw a contrast. when you look at the tiny table in the picture, brooke, it is a pretty intimate setting. if he's going to get in to it and draw a contrast, that's sort of code for confrontation. we'll see if he makes good on the promise of the team. >> bring yaannbrianna, do they say something memorable, as in not in a good way memorable? >> reporter: you'll remember he's sort of known as a bit of a gaffe machine. puts in his foot in his mouth from time to time. he said that the middle class buried for four years and that was something that the romney campaign just jumped on. the thing is, while he's
vision. governor romney, the opposite. the last thing we need now is another war. >> congressman ryan? >> we mourn the loss of these four americans who were murdered. when you take a look at what's happened in the last few weeks, they sent the u.n. ambassador out to say that this was because of a protest and a youtube video. it took the president two weeks to acknowledge that this was a terrorist attack. he went to the u.n. and in his speech at the u.n. he said six times, he talked about the youtube video. look, if we're hit by terrorists, we're going to call it for what it is, a terrorist attack. our ambassador in paris has a marine detachment guarding him. shouldn't we have a marine detachment guarding our ambassador in benghazi, a place we knew there was an al qaeda cell with arms? this is becoming more troubling by the day. they first blamed the youtube video. now they're trying to blame the romney-ryan ticket for make -- making this an issue. with respect to iraq, we had the same position before the withdrawal, which was we agreed with the obama administration. let's secure our g

concerned about, and don't forget, paul ryan was the first test of mitt romney. mitt romney chose him to be his running mate. and so it was very important to mitt romney himself that paul ryan be a credible contender sitting next to joe biden, who is a very experienced politician, and also has been vice president. >> gloria, you've been doing this a while. was that the most incredible vice presidential debate you've seen? >> it was. i must say the anticipation was more for sarah palin for me because we were sort of interested to see, again, joe biden, how he would deal with sarah palin, and whether she could actually stand toe to toe with him. the bar was very low for sarah palin and she surpassed what people expected. this was so interesting, of course, because joe biden essentially had to save the democratic party or so it seemed. and the president had to watch him very closely and probably pretty beholden today, but you have the town hall coming up that candy is going to moderate. >> let me tell everyone about it. gloria borger, thank you. coming out of here this vp debate and head
romney and paul ryan as, you know, against the middle class and taxing the middle class. i think joe biden is going to wrap mitt romney and paul ryan as tightly together as possible and just sort of drop the ryan plan on top it to try to implode the pair. they think that is good ground. as far as paul ryan is concerned, i think he is kind a policy wonk. his problem is he's a numbers guy, and he's up against frankly and i think both runs previous head of the republican party and michael nutter both said that joe biden is a very accessible politician. he tends to put things the way that people get it immediately. he's just got that kind of manner about him. i think that's the -- in some ways, you know, we look at the substance and style. as far as style is concerned, i think paul ryan's fear here is he's too much of a wonk sxort of throwing out numbers. you know, you can expect joe biden to say, gee, i took a look at your numbers and here's what they would do to george next door. ryan has to be careful about that kind of debate. >> the next presidential debate, you're moderating octobe
and most of those stops have been this year, mitt romney and paul ryan are there again this weekend as john shows us it is the battleground of the battleground states. and ohio's working moms could be the key to victory. >> the lights still on past midnight. another 20-hour day for jessica. >> i'm a single mom of a 5-year-old little girl who is fantastic. i work full time. and go to school full time. so my day usually starts around 4:45 in the morning, and ends close to 1:00 a.m. you do what you have to do in this economy. >> her vote, she said, is for jillian's future. she was leaning mitt romney until his own words pushed her back to undecided. >> about the 47%, and i can't worry about them. how can you put your faith and trust in a candidate that doesn't care about everybody? >> to win ohio and other key battlegrounds, romney must overcome the doubts of working moms like jessica. new cnn polling shows a post-debate romney bounce but still a narrow obama lead. white women are the battle within the battleground. 52% support the president now. that's up from the 47% he received here in 2008
a victory for the romney side because paul ryan was three years old when joe biden began serving and paul ryan managed to match him. >> this is why i think it is a neck victory for the romney campaign because the momentum is on their side after the last presidential debate, that did not stop last night. it keeps going. i don't think it gathers steam, but did not slow down. dennis: give me a fearless prediction, who wins this election on november 6? >> i'm still sticking with obama, but as i have been saying, romney has the momentum and the battlefield could expand bringing more states in. if you see mitt romney going to more states to campaign and where he is been so far, that is a really good sign for the romney people. dennis: you believe if romney wins it is not good for the market. i had not heard that from very many people. explain yourself. >> if romney is elected, he pledged he would not renominate ben bernanke. the removal of accommodation could come sooner rather than later. dennis: sitting there watching the debate last night, have to tell you the vice president ducking it up wi
; and paul ryan will be working to stretch mitt romney's debate double into a home run. >> if ryan does really, really well, it could possibly fundamentally make this a real horse race, not just nationally but in the battleground states. so, i think there is a lot of expectation on both sides for what this debate possible could do. >> reporter: if you thought the first presidential debate was bogg down in stastics and policy details, you'll have more fun tonight. debate veterans are expecting fireworks. jeff nesbit was press secretary for former vice-president dan quayle. >> while both of them can go deep on wonky politics-- biden can go pretty deep on foreign policy and ryan can go pretty deep on economic policy-- i don't expect that at all in this debate. vice-presidential debates basically are two attack dogs going at each other to defend and promote the top of the ticket. >> reporter: once again, medicare will likely be the star of the show. many democrats were disappointed president obama didn't take governor romney on in their debate, so democrats are looking to biden to do a lot
%-45% in that state. however, mitt romney got on a wave in denver last week and paul ryan has a chance tonight, guys, to continue that momentum, an interesting match-up, we've seen it before of an older, experienced vice president, a younger less tested running mate. we saw it with dick cheney and with john edwards in 2004. dick cheney got the better of that. we saw it with lloyd benson and dan quayle in 1988. it appeared that lloyd benson got the better of that, but of course george bush and dan quayle won the election. i talked to dan quayle yesterday -- or a few days ago, rather, he said he thinks he helped george h.w. bush in that race, even though he got smacked down with that "you're no jack kennedy" line, because he took the fight to michael dukakis and that's the bottom line that you hear from people who have been through these debates, is that the key for vice presidential candidates, guys, is for them to focus their fire not on the counter pa counterpart standing across the stage from them but rather, on the top of the other ticket. you can expect joe biden's going to be very aggressive in
. >> romney running mate paul ryan arrived in kentucky where he will face-off for 90 minutes with the vice president joe biden. it will be ryan's first debate on the national stage. with the race so close there is extra pressure for him to turn in a clutch performance. >> vice president biden travels to the debate site later today. he had several mock debates with the paul ryan stand-in, maryland congressman chris van holland. who has been with biden all week helping him prep, and a sign of how good he feels about his prospects, his first campaign event after the debate will be in wisconsin, right in paul ryan's back yard. martha raddatz moderates the debate and we will carry it live. >>> as for the top of the ticket, there are questions this morning about where mitt romney stands on abortion. romney said in an interview tuesday that he has no plans for abortion legislation if elected. but anti-abortion advocates reminded him of his pledge to do everything in his power to promote a culture of life. and so on the stump in ohio, romney reaffirmed that he is indeed pro-life. in an interview w
